Generosity Basics, Why Generosity Matters

Why Does Generosity Matter?

Your generous actions are a vote for the future, a sign of your optimism that things will be better in the future.

Generosity is fundamental to a self you are happy to live with

Ever worry about “the meaning of life?” Why am I here? Or other showstoppers? Probably not too often as such BIG questions are simply overwhelming. But we do enjoy a special gift as humans, the ability to think about ourselves, to reflect on our actions and judge them. (possible link to Kronman book info here).

I believe that we all have the ‘agency’ to plan for the future and act in pursuit of our hopes and dreams. Of course, the challenge is more difficult for some people than others, and this fact alone demonstrates the more importance of generosity. Everyone deserves an equal chance to pursue happiness (as our Founders asserted).

There is plenty of scientific data to prove that generous people are happier and more optimistic. (link to the Paradox of Generosity) A gift of time or money to benefit another is a vote for a better future. Such actions provide the giver (YOU) with a sense of purpose and usefulness.

Generosity creates a bridge to optimism and gratitude

When you work to recognize the needs of others, you will, I believe, gain perspective on your own circumstances. There is no better way to develop a sense of gratitude for what you DO have than focusing on others in need.

Your generous actions are a vote for the future, a sign of your optimism that things will be better in the future. Such an attitude is essential to your own well-being.

Your personal giving is unrelated to your ‘wealth’

All of us think of BIG GIFTS from wealthy people as the cornerstone of generosity. . . but ‘wealth’ is not ‘prosperity.’ Wealth is measured in dollars and possessions, but prosperity is measured in security, reputation, relationships, happiness, contentment and well-being. Prosperity can only be attained in relation to oneself and others. No one images prosperous people behind locked gates and barb wired fences. You will prosper through your generosity.
